    Objectives

    4.1 THE OBJECTS OF THE CIO ARE:4.1.1 TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO INDIVIDUAL HOLDERS OF THE VICTORIA CROSS AND GEORGE CROSS AND THEIR DEPENDANTS AND DESCENDANTS WHO ARE IN NEED BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL HARDSHIP OR DISTRESS, OR AT RISK OF FINANCIAL HARDSHIP OR DISTRESS OR OF FALLING INTO POVERTY INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES;4.1.2 TO PROMOTE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE ARMED FORCES AND THE POLICE, FIRE, RESCUE AND AMBULANCE SERVICES AND TO ENCOURAGE CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY AND GOOD CITIZENSHIP BY HONOURING AND SUPPORTING HOLDERS OF THE VICTORIA CROSS AND GEORGE CROSS AND THEIR DEPENDANTS AND DESCENDANTS;4.1.3 TO RESTORE AND/OR ERECT THE GRAVES OF AND MEMORIALS ASSOCIATED WITH HOLDERS OF THE VICTORIA CROSS AND GEORGE CROSS; 4.1.4 TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON MATTERS RELATING TO THE VICTORIA CROSS AND GEORGE CROSS; AND4.1.5 TO ADVANCE SUCH OTHER PURPOSES THAT ARE EXCLUSIVELY CHARITABLE ACCORDING TO THE LAWS OF ENGLAND AND WALES AS THE CHARITY TRUSTEES IN THEIR ABSOLUTE DISCRETION THINK FIT, HAVING PARTICULAR REGARD TO THE NEEDS OF HOLDERS OF THE VICTORIA CROSS AND GEORGE CROSS AND THEIR DEPENDANTS AND DESCENDANTS. 4.2 FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF DOUBT, DESCENDANTS IN THIS CLAUSE 4 SHALL INCLUDE (WITHOUT LIMITATION) SPOUSES AND CIVIL PARTNERS (INCLUDING FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF DOUBT ANY PERSON, WHETHER OF A DIFFERENT SEX OR THE SAME SEX, WITH WHOM A HOLDER OF THE VICTORIA CROSS OR GEORGE CROSS LIVES AS PARTNER IN A FAMILY RELATIONSHIP) AND CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN (WHETHER ADOPTED, ILLEGITIMATE, STEP OR OTHERWISE) AND SO FORTH THROUGH SUCCEEDING GENERATIONS. 4.3 NOTHING IN THIS CONSTITUTION SHALL AUTHORISE AN APPLICATION OF THE PROPERTY OF THE CIO FOR THE PURPOSES WHICH ARE NOT CHARITABLE IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 7 OF THE CHARITIES AND TRUSTEE INVESTMENT (SCOTLAND) ACT 2005 AND SECTION 2 OF THE CHARITIES ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 2008.
