How do they operate?

Hello World Internet Hubs programme

Objectives: To solve the global education deficit by working in the most marginalised communities to build state-of-the-art outdoor internet hubs

Intervention period: Dependant on the needs of the individual

Beneficiaries: Underprivileged adults and children

Description: Hello World builds solar-powered outdoor internet hubs in close partnership with underprivileged local communities. The hubs are wifi-enabled and loaded with educational software and applications, giving children the opportunity to educate themselves. With Hello Word children with no or limited access to education have a chance to improve their learning via apps, software, games and the internet. In addition, the hubs are important resources to teachers, offering information lesson plans and access to online learning tools.

Hub Heroes Project

Objectives: To increase literacy and numeracy for children at Hello World hubs and empower mothers in the communities to take advantage of the technology and connectivity

Intervention period: Dependant on the needs of the individual

Beneficiaries: Underprivileged adults and children

Description: Hello World have partnered with OneBillion, who have created a tablet called the Onetab. The device has a dedicated designed so will solely deliver literacy and numeracy software and will enable children with no formal education to teach themselves to read, write and do maths. The software is language appropriate and context appropriate, so children are learning from people who look like them and through stories that sound familiar. In March 2020, 100 families in their Kampala Hub communities received a Onetab and each family has a nominated 'Hub Hero'. In most cases, the Hub Hero will be the mother of the family as they have been shown to prioritise education in the family.

Comment: In 2020, Hello World's unique infrastructure and local networks meant they were able to provide food and access to health information in their Hub communities as well as free, unlimited access to Wi-fi so communities could access information and communicate more easily through the pandemic. At Hubs, they installed free hand washing facilities with soap and water and made information available on prevention and management of COVID-19. This was aided by four new Community Support Officers helping Hubs reach their full potential with plans to recruit further officers. They have also created Hub Heroes, an in-home educational software which is allowing children to learn safely during lockdown.

How effective are they?
Notes: Hello World receive monthly reports from their internet service provider detailing which websites communities are accessing and for how long. They also collect passive data from the tablets at each Hub to see which educational apps children are using.

Commentary: Hello World has partnered with impact measurement specialists 60 decibels to measure the user experience at Hubs in Nepal and Uganda and help them gain insights to users were getting the right support.

Hello World surveys have shown an average of 1000+ children are accessing each Hub they provide in each the communities they reach.
