Sonshine Club supports children with disabilities and their parents, through phenomenally successful after-school clubs, home kits and parental peer support groups. We are applying to enable us to run a six-month-long peer support and training group for struggling parents of children with disabilities. The grant funding will be used to pay for room rental, a project co-ordinator, volunteer expenses, relevant professionals, marketing costs, a tablet, and associated running costs. Through providing a safe, supportive, productive environment, this project will help overwhelmed, disadvantaged mothers of children with disabilities feel supported in their daily challenges, thus improving their their mental and emotional wellbeing, increasing their self-confidence, and allowing them to feel a strong sense of belonging to a community of others like them.

This 15-month project provides a peer-support group for parents who have children with disabilities who live in Hackney; there will be a focus on parents of children with autism. The monthly meetings are a chance for parents to hear from professional speakers, as well as take part in restorative and fun activities such as yoga. Any learning or feedback from the meetings are shared with other local support organisations working with this target group. The sessions enable parents to gain support, understanding and friendship from other people who are experiencing similar challenges.
