This funding will support Shama Women’s Centre to continue running its core mental health support services to vulnerable and recently bereaved woman and also those suffering from high levels of anxiety and depression in Leicester. Activities will seek to improve mental and physical health employability and reduce isolation. Shama Women’s Centre (Shama) was established in 1983 by a group of local women seeking to provide the area’s female population with opportunities for economic educational and social empowerment.

It provided a range of services and activities, including self-help support groups, workshops on cooking, social media, counselling, holistic therapies, and information and guidance. This two-year project supported women from black and minority ethnic groups (BAME) in Highfield in Leicester who are victims of domestic abuse. It provided them with a self-help group, befriending support, counselling, ESOL (English as a Second Language) classes, access to holistic therapies and information, advice and guidance. The project helped to make a positive impact on the women’s mental health and reduce feelings of isolation. A project team including participants led the project.

The Bereavement to Achievement Plus project will provide bereaved women and their families with support and advice to increase their employment skills._x000D_ The project will train volunteers to support bereaved women through a holistic approach of one-to-one and group counselling sessions, befriending support and therapy sessions. The project will also offer training, employability skills which include IT, textiles training and accredited qualifications as well as volunteering opportunities.

We will provide a 'culturally conducive women only safe space' at Shama for black minority ethnic women who have experienced or are at risk of domestic abuse, sexual violence, and cultural barriers due to race and gender, overcome poor mental health by participating in a range of interactive peer support activities with other victims, empowering them to develop resilience, coping strategies and friendships through:-a series of weekly interactive creative workshops such as jewellery making, tapestry, sewing, cooking use of gym and sauna which help facilitate discussion, share experiences and develop meaningful friendships. These will be led by women who have have experienced multiple disadvantages, but have acquired creative skills that they would like to share with others.- Social media workshops helping women to develop their IT skills, use of the internet, emails, facebook, twitter helping them to access online peer support at any time when needed, extending their social networks. We know from experience that a large percentage of BME women will have little knowledge of the financial resources to use or access a computer.-There will be an option for women who lack the confidence to meet in a group and prefer 1-1 peer support to be ' buddied' with a peer supporter, who shares similar experiences, and can speak the same language, to help overcome their trauma.- Peer Supporters will have the opportunity to develop their mentoring skills through Shama's befriending programme and provided with ongoing clinical supervision byits qualified Counsellors.

1) 70% of participants will have improved their employability skills and have gained the confidence to apply for work by improved English Language, the opportunity to learn or enhance existing machining skills through the textiles training programme; help into work and volunteering opportunities. 2) 70% of participants will have improved their health and wellbeing through weekly workshops in the benefits and practical techniques of holistic therapies; and by using Shama's gym and sauna 3) 75% will feel less isolated by participating in women only activities, accessing social networks, by gaining social media skills and through developing friendships and self- help groups.
