This funding will support CORE - Calverton Oasis Resources and Education (CORE) to continue running the CORE community hub that provides an array of services in Calverton village and surrounding areas in Gedling Nottinghamshire to reduce social isolation improve wellbeing provide signposting services and enhance the employability of local people receiving £194402 over four years. OrganisationCORE was established in 1994 following the closure of the local pit to address local issues of long-term unemployment low educational attainment social isolation and limited access to essential services. The organisation registered as a charity in 2000 and provides opportunities for residents of Calverton other surrounding villages and the nearby urban area of Arnold to improve their employability and life skills through training opportunities and to reduce social isolation through CORE’s activity programme. CORE also hosts essential services and delivers signposting advice. CORE is based at Calverton Working Men’s Club (CWMC) in Calverton Village a former mining community of around 7000 residents with an older than average population and is open four days a week. Calverton Village is in the Gedling area of Central Nottinghamshire which is an underinvested region for National Lottery Community funding. The organisation employs 1.9 members of staff engages around 30 volunteers and supports around 6000 beneficiaries a year. ProposalThis proposal is requesting continuation funding for CORE’s core activities over four years including a small amount of organisational development activities to follow on from their current one year Reaching Communities project. In 2021 CORE submitted a core cost continuation request for five years. At the time the organisation was going through a period of transition with the previous team of two managers retiring and a new project manager and assistant project manager coming into post. Additionally CORE was approachied to travel into Nottingham City to access services. - Food Support Service – CORE has recently established a partnership with Fareshare to set up a food support service as there is a local gap in services in north Gedling. The service offers boxes of food for £3.50 worth between £15-£20. The organisation also partners with the Trussell Trust Food Bank based in Arnold where volunteers collect food parcels for delivery. - Job Club - A twice weekly service to enhance employability including one-to-one life coaching interview preparations CV writing careers advice and work experience placements. Previously CORE funded this activity but has now engaged Futures a local authority funded provider to provide a free service. - Training and Courses - Predominately tailored to Calverton’s older population courses are available in digital accessibility arts and crafts languages genealogy health and beauty and gentle accessible exercise. Alongside these activities CORE also offers office services and volunteering opportunities. The move to CORE’s new location at the Calverton Working Men’s Club has been successful and informal conversations have taken place about an extension to a four-year lease. The current lease is in place until March 2023. CWMC is fully accessible with large rooms for socially distanced activities access to outdoor spaces kitchen facilities and a car park. The project’s beneficiaries would be residents of Calverton and the surrounding areas with a focus on older people people experiencing long-term unemployment people with poor physical or mental health people experiencing financial hardship and people experiencing social isolation or digital exclusion. Most of CORE’s activities take place on site at the Calverton Working Men’s Club.

We wish to continue to run activities that help local people keep active and engaged in their community. We want to help people recover from the pandemic and raise their confidence in reintegrating.

Activities and support services for older people

This funding will be used to update and renew its community hub's IT equipment. The project aims to enable the continued and future delivery of a variety of services and activities.

We will provide a weekly seated yoga class and, if affordable, other activities that improve health and well-being in our community.

The project will improve their building with new toilet facilities, storage space, flooring and a soundproof door. This will improve facilities for people who use the group.

It aims to tackle long-standing issues common to ex-mining rural Nottinghamshire villages in the Gedling, Newark and Sherwood boroughs, in particular Calverton and its bordering villages. Using a multi-faceted approach, the project will deliver 50 courses yearly to improve employability, self-reliance and relieve loneliness. A club will run twice weekly providing a holistic approach including life coaching, professional psychotherapy and career advice.
