A series of archaeological surveys was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology and others between 1991 and 2009 to investigate potential options for the site of the new Stonehenge Visitor Centre (SVC) and associated access routes, both within the World Heritage Site (WHS) at Larkhill, Fargo Plantation and King Barrow Ridge, and beyond the WHS boundary at Airmans Corner and Countess (East and West). The surveys comprised five principal elements: field walking; hand excavation of test pits; geophysical survey; trial trenching; and auger survey. This project is designed to draw together the results of these surveys and presents their results via analysis and publication.

The project will provide a means by which both commercial developers and archaeologists alike can assess the significance and distribution of Late Upper Palaeolithic (LUP) and Mesolithic sedimentary deposits and palaeoenvironmental preservation (waterlogged remains, pollen and archaeozoological material). The project design is a response to the English Heritage National Heritage Protection Plan 2011 call for proposals to address issues concerning sedimentary and wetland archaeology and Pleistocene and Early Holocene archaeology. The project will be achieved through a multi-faceted approach to predicting early prehistoric land-surfaces and remains, using the Middle Kennet Valley, Berkshire as a case study.

Most of the work leading to the production of the draft monograph has now been completed, with only the contribution on the prehistoric pottery and the prehistoric discussion outstanding, both expected from HE at the end of March 2018. Virtually all of the drawings relating to the Anglo-Saxon and later aspects of the site have been completed at WA (four remain to be done) but, at the end of January 2018, many of the prehistoric drawings remained to be completed/re-formatted for publication or had not yet been started. It was originally proposed that most of the prehistoric illustrations, and some of the introductory illustrations, would be done (or completed/formatted) in the HE graphics office at Fort Cumberland, but this has not proved possible within the timeframe for publication (the end of 2018). Therefore, it has been agreed with HE that the outstanding work on the existing and further required prehistoric illustrations be undertaken by the WA graphics office in order to ensure completion of the monograph for publication later this year. Subsequently, and following the submission and acceptance of a project design, the additional drawings of the prehistoric pottery have been completed (paging up will be done following receipt of the report), a selection of the worked flint has been made − with illustration to commence Monday 12 March, and work has begun on the outstanding prehistoric site illustrations. Four WA illustrators have been assigned to the project, and it is anticipated that the outstanding work will be completed by Friday 6th April 2018.

In February 1917, the steamship Mendi sank south of the Isle of Wight with the loss of hundreds of men of the South African Native Labour Corps. This is an event that remains deeply symbolic to South Africa and it is also seen as a symbol of equality and social justice in the UK. Historic England has previously supported the creation of We Die Like Brothers, a free, downloadable education resource pack about the loss of the steamship Mendi in 1917, south of the Isle of Wight. The pack is the online presence of the We Die Like Brothers exhibition at the South African National War Memorial. This project aims to revise and update the We Die Like Brothers Education Resource Pack following the major centenary commemorations of the loss of the ship in February 2017, involving ships of the South African and Royal Navies. Subject to availability, the revised pack will incorporate a number of new sources and formats, including survey data generated by the Royal Navy and media and diver imagery. The pack will also make reference to the monograph being published by Historic England to mark the centenary commemorations.
