'Adventure on your doorstep' is ....more Somerspirit is a very small registered charity and part of Girlguiding. We have a Comet Trio, called 'Somerspirit', based at Sutton Bingham Sailing Club near Yeovil. 'Adventure on your doorstep' is our message to girls and young women in Somerset. We want to make sailing fun, accessible and affordable. In 2019 we had fourteen groups take part in sailing sessions on Somerspirit, with approximately 150 girls and young women getting involved. During a session 2, 3 or 6 hour session they will assist with rigging and launching the boat, and are introduced to the basics of dinghy sailing while on the water. Participants attend through their Brownie (7-10), Guide (10-14), Ranger (14-18) or Inspire (18-30) group, and we frequently have repeat attendance. Where appropriate we're able to sign-post participants to further sailing training opportunities at RYA sailing centres. As well as developing a love of the sport, participants develop a range of skills including communication and teamwork. Taking part in an adventurous activity increases their confidence. In terms of their mental health, we find that the girls and young women value the time away from the pressures of daily life. They get the chance to relax in nature, away from the online world. Every year Girlguiding conducts a flagship Girls Attitude survey of 2000 girls and young women. The report makes it clear how important it is for us to provide opportunities to participate in sport / physical activity - as they get older girls say they have fewer opportunities to participate in sport than boys. Our programme makes sailing affordable. For instance, a we charge Brownie, Guide and Ranger units £35 for a 3-hour session. If it is attended by 12 girls, it works out at less than £3 per person.
