The aim of this new project is to train volunteers to provide respite for carers and a befriending service for isolated elderly people including those suffering disabilities who are disengaged from their community in the Borough of Sandwell in the West Midlands. Volunteers will be recruited with the help of the Volunteering Bureau and will be trained to become companions to people mostly over 60 who are lonely due to bereavement, ill health or advancing years.
