Working equally in Liverpool and Rochdale we will deliver 18 Small Steps for Peace classroom programmes to 828 upper primary students, each consisting of 3 sessions we facilitate and 4 teachers lead with accompanying reusable toolkit
18 Small Steps adult sessions with 288 parents, teachers, governors of 18 primary schools
10 “clinics” at parent forums for 150 beneficiaries where specific manifestations of 6 broader extremism harms and drivers are addressed (justification of violence, hate promotion, isolation, alternative politico-legal systems, democracy rejection, specific harmful practices) We will build out from the schools to work with families in community settings, reaching beyond gatekeepers and the “usual suspects”. This will involve:
12 focused family support interventions of 48 sessions to average groups of 4
8 Challenging Hate day workshops for 128 locals, officers, practitioners to equip them with the capability to use dialogue to constructively challenge attitudes and behaviours contrary to common values (democracy, rule of law, liberty, tolerance, opportunity) while minimising risk of polarising ‘blowback’
4 x 30 hr (12wk) community peacebuilder courses fort 64 parents and other sources of social support for the vulnerable
2 x 30 hr (12wk) dialogue (facilitation and public speaking) courses for 32 beneficiaries to increase capability to counter extremist narratives and enhance sustainable civic participation.
2 community dialogue events for c. 150-200 locals led by graduates of earlier courses. With this comprehensive programme of place-based counter-extremism for 1250 beneficiaries we hope to increase capability and confidence to challenge extremist narratives and their drivers, and sustain this impact by embedding it in broad networks of expanded bridging and linking social capital. The project will enhance critical thinking especially in the cognitive aspects of emotional intelligence and in the recognition of and resistance to cognitive biases, particularly outgroup and ingroup ones at the root of mistrust, separation, intolerance

Provision of a series of interventions to family groups exposed the 22nd May 2017 bombing in Manchester. The project will target beneficiaries resident in Cheshire. The interventions are designed to be delivered in day-long settings, but can be adapted to work overnight using the Warrington Peace Centre’s residential facilities. The interventions will aim to increase resilience and family cohesion by (re)developing connections within families, repairing and enhancing sources of social support.

The project will develop skills in peaceful conflict resolution, leadership and advocacy amongst survivors of political violence, young people vulnerable to radicalisation and violent solutions to conflict and members of Diaspora communities and their neighbours, i.e. people who have settled in England from a different country.
