This group will use the funding to deliver a variety of activities and community events from the farmhouse for people living in the surrounding areas in the south-east of Edinburgh. Activities will focus on improving health and wellbeing through skill developing activity sessions. There will also be opportunities for volunteering and peer learning helping to reduce isolation and improved social connections.

We'd like to build an outdoor sensory play area to enable children of all ages to have somewhere local that is safe, free, and accessible to have fun and build together outdoors.

Proposal Having received requests about whether we could offer healthy 'fast-food', we propose to use our training kitchen to: prepare simple, healthy, food – 2 x simple courses, as fresh, chill-cooked food for reheating, run over 44 weeks, consisting of 2 weeks promotion/liaison - establishing referral system; 2 weeks trial (to ID issues and address), followed by 5 x 8week blocks of full service. 1. Providing 24 meals each weekly session for 24 referrals, advised by our partner organisations. 2. deliver this meal, once a week, to those most benefiting from such a service for 40 weeks (allowing for staff sickness, holidays - this will also be 2 week trial, thus 42 weeks in total) 3. provide access to any surplus through both our 'community' fridge and others setting up within our key areas encourage sustainable delivery services by electric bike. Structure: 1. 2 weeks – run in to establish project and referral system 2. initially 6, ready trained volunteers (previous trainees who have REHIS qualifications) will work under our professional chef-trainer for 8 weeks 3. thereafter 6 will take over for an additional 4 x blocks of 8 weeks 4. total of trainees working over 44 week period: 15-30 5. build a 6-8 week set cycle of recipes 6. after the initial 10 week period, the team would have a 'bible' of recipes established and the skills and confidence to work independently. 7. The recipes would also be made available to others, both through our web site and where possible as hard copies. Partners/referrals: We have discussed and agreed to take referrals from: Bingham 50+ Carr Gomm (housing & GP based social prescriber) Moredun High Flats Tenants' Association Crisis (people in temporary accommodation with limited cooking facilities) The White House, Craigmillar – to take additional meals for identified carers. We want to build on our successful pilot project, a cooking training group and community cafe. We want to develop, extend and sustain a model that can continue once our farmhouse renovation is complete and our centre fully open. We will provide training for 6 to 8 people marginalised due to welfare reform, dependency on benefits, unemployment, ethnicity, age and/or poor mental wellbeing. During their training they will run a weekly, social hub/café to provide a light lunch for socially isolated people on low incomes. We will provide our learners with a structured learning programme (Literacy, Numeracy, Customer service, CV preparation, ICT, working as a team) with the opportunity for qualifications, and practical experience. As they prepare the food and serve customers, our learners will work towards REHIS Food Hygiene certification, REHIS Nutritions, SQA up to Level 3, and Working With Others. The project will: • use seasonal and local produce where possible, through local community gardens we partner with and produce from our own garden • link with local Health Centres, GPs and City of Edinburgh Council Local Area Coordination team • support people on tight budgets to eat well and healthily, including those with long term conditions, obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc. Our chef is a qualified nutrionalist. • provide links to additional help and support networks for people who are socially isolated and lonely • provide a venue for other organisations to meet, share practice and forge links. This is innovative and special for our community because nothing else exists like this here and because it will be a building block in our transformation of the farmhouse into a vibrant community hub where people have somewhere to learn about food, prepare it, share and enjoy it with others.
