£4,568	02/12/2016	In 2016/17, in co-operation with NHS Ayrshire and Arran, SAF piloted a four day CAN (cheap and nutritious) cookery course for foodbank clients and other vulnerable people to give them the skills and ....more In 2016/17, in co-operation with NHS Ayrshire and Arran, SAF piloted a four day CAN (cheap and nutritious) cookery course for foodbank clients and other vulnerable people to give them the skills and knowledge to prepare good home-cooked food for their families and themselves. While this was successful, there were lessons learned that SAF wishes to address in future courses. These include: learning from the course must be reinforced by practice. participants often do not possess the necessary implements for the most basic cooking participants should learn to cook fresh food, not only the canned food provided by SAF SAF therefore proposes that future courses should: provide each participant with the ingredients for the meal cooked on each day of the course to enable them to prepare it themselves at home, thus increasing their confidence: previously they only received the recipe card provide a starter pack of pot, utensils, etc., for each participant on completion of the course accept the offer from The C-op in Maybole to supply fresh food, eg, meat and vegetables, for the course and ask shops in other areas to do likewise. Another new feature is that SAF volunteers who deliver the courses will also give presentations on nutrition, its importance for health and how cooking from scratch is cheaper than ready meals, coupled with cookery demonstrations, to groups at risk of poverty in the expectation that some of them will then participate in one of the courses. To date, there has been interest from Ayrshire College and our other partner organisations, Girvan Youth Trust, Hansel Community, Shelter and Enable. Discreet assistance will be available for those who may have literacies difficulties. In this regard, we are asking NHS Ayrshire and Arran to provide more graphics on the recipe cards or permission to adapt them ourselves.
