We will support and encourage women to improve their physical health by cycling on a regular basis: We know from the pilot that through gradual encouragement and support, over 80% of participants noted that their health had improved significantly thanks to Pedal Pathways sessions. We also know that they continued to cycle beyond the course ensuring the longer-term health impact of the project. We expect that all of those participating in this next phase of the project will see similar, if not greater results. Based on this experience, we also expect to see more women using cycling as part of an active lifestyle: By cycling as a means of transport to and from key services, women engaged in Pedal Pathways will have access to a low-cost mode of transport which also doubles as an effective form of exercise. This will have a major impact on their physical health while also providing a real sense of freedom and access. Participants in our pilot reported a feeling of freedom and independence from cycling which they had never felt before. This has a knock-on effect on mental health as well. Pedal Pathways participants will experience an improvement in their mental health: Cycling reduces stress, opens up social circles and is relaxing. For women who are experiencing challenging personal circumstances, time to develop their skills and meet new people while out on a bike ride will have many benefits for their mental health. Our cycling and wellness sessions will introduce mindfulness techniques while also linking the importance of regular physical exercise on your mental health. Combined, our project will open up opportunities to explore exercise, active travel and social opportunities, all through the simple act of riding a bike! The impact on mental and physical health will be significant.

In Scotland, 16.7% of young people are unemployment and over 72,000 are seeking work. Whilst the Scottish Government advocates skills development and learning as a catalyst for life-long employment, the reality is that it can be difficult for young people to access vocational training. The Bike Station Academy delivers training to young people aged 16-24 years, who are not in employment, education or training, providing them with the skills to set up bike hubs in 6 Glasgow communities. The grant will pay for a Development Officer and Training Co-ordinator to provide industry standard training and business skills. Each hub will be run by young people with wider benefits for their area.
