We will extend an employees hours to develop the service and coordinate staff and volunteers to carry out the pilot for over 60s. Research shows loneliness amongst older people is detrimental to their health & even a small input of social interaction is a boost to self-esteem. Increasing social interaction allows clients to feel part of a community even if they never leave their house. Shopper-Aide are looking to provide a service of social activities to reduce loneliness for older people living in the community and unable to access community based support, this could include people who don’t wish to participate in group based activities. ‘Evoking Memories’ could encompass all areas that the client wishes to pursue with or without family friends, volunteers etc and can be achieved in many ways e.g. • Making a personal memory book • Providing and developing activities for an individual to use in their own home • Arranging for friends to meet up • Recording memories in sound and pictures A scoping exercise is already planned to ascertain numbers and types of activities to set up a pilot project as there is already indication from a variety of sources for a need for this. It is a person-centre based approach to improve the lives of older people but will also provide learning and training for staff and volunteers in working with older people which helps if looking for work but can also help build their own self esteem. We can identify some prospective clients from our own cohort but working with other care agencies we will be able to reach even more in need of help.
