We want to employ a dedicated money trainer for 8 hours/week to allow us to meet requests to deliver money courses in schools and community venues to improve financial education and prevent people getting into debt. And we want to develop the service supporting people in debt as a result of welfare reform, offering comprehensive support and ensuring that people in difficulty know about the service and can access help. The money courses help people look at their finances in a nonthreatening way, and can prevent debt (or further debt). We have a good relationship with the JobCentre and will run courses aimed at people on benefits, especially those moving to Universal Credit. The money courses have been piloted in primary and secondary schools and in community venues including our own food bank – they have been well-received and led to more invitations. For those already 'in too deep', the CAP centre offers specialist support to people in debt. The CAP service is unique in that it is completely free; and it includes a personality profile that makes creditors aware of any variables that may have contributed to debt, or problems paying debt back, e.g. marriage breakdown, poor mental health, addiction, redundancy and so on. We offer more than just financial advice. Each person receiving debt support will be connected with a befriender, who offers emotional and practical support. We celebrate birthdays and Christmas; help prepare for job interviews and signpost to other agencies who can step in with specialist support. Many clients say that their life is transformed once they sign up with CAP. WT has an internal referral system within the organisation – people with emotional/behavioural issues that contribute to their situation can access support from our counselling service, and we refer to our family worker if required.
