The Outer Hebrides has many social issues, and Cothrom exists as a lifeline to many by offering individualised learning opportunities whilst also offering a Gaidhlig medium nursery. However a satellite broadband connection of <2Mbps and a challenging economic climate have so far prevented the area from reaching full potential. The islands are currently undergoing a fibre broadband infrastructure upgrade that has the potential to change life for many people.
We aim to build digital skills into our adult learning provision and nursery, and by offering evening classes and drop-ins. Built on the five basic digital skills, we will offer guidance on getting better deals for things like energy and insurance, staying safe and saving money online, preparing for the Universal Credit roll out, and e-learning opportunities.
We will offer accessible training and evening classes to local tradespeople and small business owners on how to use digital to grow their business. Drop-ins will offer informal 1-to-1 support and be centred on helping people achieve financial literacy and economic sustainability. We will also incorporate digital skills into our adult learning and Gaidhlig nursery. Our Core Skills, Adult Learning and Employability programs will evolve to include skills such as online security, job searching, using social media, research and managing information.
The nursery will offer parents the opportunity to increase their confidence in helping their children learn Gaidhlig using digital resources in conjunction with online safety and security, thereby increasing confidence and facilitating further economic activity. This will involve training 2-3 Digital Champions to conduct the sessions, pass on training and help build the revamped courses and purchase of the required equipment and software we need to deliver the programme. A selection of devices (PCs, laptops and tablets) will be used to provide choice and flexibility.

Based on the remote island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and providing a service across the 9 islands of Uist and Barra, Cothrom is a community anchor organisation that delivers community-based learning and training ranging from adult literacy and parenting classes to accredited vocational qualifications that are key to the local economy. They also provide the only full-time nursery care on the islands - a vital service for working parents. The grant will fund a worker to develop and upskill the organisation in digital skills that it can take advantage of a new digital e-learning network being introduced in the Outer Hebrides. This will enable hundreds more people in remote areas to access adult learning and gain vital qualifications.
