O-BON ON THE FOYLE FESTIVAL GROUP

The objectives of the group are to celebrate and promote Japanese culture and arts in Northern Ireland, principally in Derry/Londonderry, through festivals and outreach programmes. In particular: - to increase public knowledge and understanding of the Japanese community in Northern Ireland through our outreach programme, school workshops, taiko instruction sessions and other activities deemed to further the purposes of the group. - to address the barriers existing in Northern Ireland, in particular in relation to music and festivals by creating a new shared space where both traditions of this historically divided country can feel safe and included while simultaneously providing opportunities for resident Japanese to contribute their traditions to the local cultural calendar - to promote the development of Japanese arts and culture within the city and county as a legacy to the work initiated during UK City of Culture 2013 particularly via continued fostering of links between our community and communities in Japan
