This two-year project delivered courses in canoeing, kayaking and narrow-boating for adults with mental health issues. The sessions were led by experienced and qualified narrow-boat skippers and kayak instructors and developed individuals’ boating skills and also provided a regular meeting point for participants at the organisation’s boatyard on the Regent’s Canal in Hackney. The sessions gave participants an incentive to leave their homes, take part in physical activity outdoors and to meet local people with similar issues. Through the project participants received support and guidance that they might not otherwise have accessed.
