'Wicketz' will use the sport of cricket as the catalyst to create everyday interactions and improve community cohesion amongst young people from diverse BAME groups across deprived areas of Bradford/Leeds. At present increasing tensions amongst different cultural groups locally have created heightened levels of misunderstanding, racism, isolation and crime. Therefore, sessions will promote cross-cultural contact between different groups, helping to foster understanding and respect as well as break down perceived social barriers, which may have previously existed. We will work in partnership with Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, local authorities and community organisations, to help improve the overall quality of life for neighbourhoods. The programme will be delivered over a 12-month period, offering 1.5-hour fun weekly sports and development sessions for young people aged 8-16 from the most disadvantaged areas of Bradford / Leeds. Delivery will take place weekly at Karmand Community Centre, Park Avenue Cricket Ground and East Leeds Cricket Club. The programme activities will include: Sports Activity: We will use cricket as the ‘hook’ to develop key personal skills such as teamwork, problem solving and time management. The activities will also provide young people with a positive social activity and reducing temptation to engage in disruptive and unhealthy activity. Social Activity Sessions: Using group/individual discussions and activities, beneficiaries will be empowered to communicate their thoughts. It will also allow them an opportunity to explore and understand each other’s life experiences, thereby increasing community cohesion. Sessions will also utilise guest speakers from a local authority, the police and community leaders, who can act as role models to participants. Participants will also learn about the ideas of social tolerance with the aim of improving cultural understanding and increasing acceptance and respect for their peers. This in turn will create greater cultural awareness and a shared community identity.
