Statistics from a previous project, which form the basis of our expectations for the proposed work: the increased safety and security our project will bring will enable women and their children to gradually integrate back into the local community from their state of isolation. Through therapeutic and practical support, the mental health of participants will be increased and given ongoing support, which will lead to greater confidence. Previously, encouraged through their own growing confidence and self esteem as well as our influence, participants started their own small groups held in their homes, meeting regularly for chats and cuppas, which helped them to develop friendships for themselves and their children: this would not have been possible within the abusive relationships in which they lived previously and all women found this life changing. 25 children will experience less school phobia, physical illness and symptoms such as bedwetting and nightmares. Group work and individual sessions will help mother and child to strengthen their bond and with support, children can be given an understanding of why their father was violent, why their mum stayed with him and to process the trauma that many of them will have experienced; this will also help to develop their confidence and we expect that it will help to break the cycle of abuse that for some children has been all they know. Work will also be done to help women value themselves and increase their self esteem: previously, 10 of the supported women left the project to go on to make healthy relationships free from abuse. We expect too that there will be a dramatic drop in incidences of non-accidental injury reporting to the local A and E, and less reliance on prescription medication such as anti-depressants. Therapy is proven to support this.
