What: Through this project we will establish the first womens only peer support group at Centrepoint that focusses specifically on the mental wellbeing of young homeless women (aged 16-25) and those at risk of homelessness. This project will be known as The U.G.L.Y (Understanding Girls Like You) Tribe. How: The U.G.L.Y. Tribe will consist of weekly themed workshops led by two facilitators and co-facilitated by participants. The workshops will be delivered from our health hub in Soho and provide participants with a safe and confidential space to talk candidly about their wellbeing and support each other. Alongside the workshops each participant will receive pastoral care from the facilitators. Throughout, participants will be encouraged and empowered to support each other, develop long lasting bonds and continuing to provide peer support long term. Those who wish to will also be given the opportunity to receive coaching training and facilitate future workshops.Difference: The U.G.L.Y. Tribe will inspire and support women to thrive in their truth with a specific focus on state of mind, emotional resilience and mental wellbeing. Through the project we will help young homeless women build the confidence and emotional resilience to cope with change; improve self-esteem and motivation; reduce isolation and establish new positive relationships/connections. Additionally, the pastoral care will support participants to access other support services both internally and externally around the subject of sexual health, healthy relationships, substance misuse programmes, counselling services as well as education, employment and training opportunities.

Young homeless men are at higher risk of poor mental health. Their unstable housing situation is often compounded by use of drugs or alcohol. At the same time, stereotypical images of strong masculinity make it difficult to deal with feelings of weakness. In Manchester over six months through to September 2017, Centrepoint worked with 355 young men aged 16-20, and of these 145 people presented with a mental health need. Locally, mental health services are stretched. Centrepoint will employ a specialist mental health advisor to work individually with young men and run group sessions which help them develop positive coping strategies and improve their mental wellbeing.

This is linked to a bigger initiative around creating a single, definitive youth homelessness databank (Youth Homelessness UpData) which can then be mined to identify propensity for long-term homelessness and which interventions are most effective. This could ensure an entirely new approach to deploying welfare resource. A beta dashboard has been created that will be further developed as time passes. This grant will support the next phase to make the analytics more useful including integration with machine learning tools such as Microsoft’s Cortana Analytics, and make data uploading easier for charities (i.e. individual-based data) as well as statutory sector agencies.
