Our focus for clients accessing one to one support and/or counselling is to build their skills and confidence and improve health and well-being. Women are affected by domestic abuse in different ways; loss of self confidence, mental ill health with stress, anxiety and depression being common factors, little experience of healthy and supportive relationships, insufficient income to cover even basic living costs, neglected health and physical well being, issues with drug and/or alcohol use. We use the empowerment star as a support planning tool with clients and focus on how to improve different areas of their lives. We provide support in a person centred way and help clients identify SMART targets (ultimate goals broken down into small achievable actions). Our counsellors, who have all been chosen because of their expertise working with people affected by domestic abuse, also work to these objectives. Women can choose to access our weekly groups where they can learn new skills and meet women who have been through similar experiences. Topics delivered include coping with stress, improving self esteem, being kind to ourselves and each other, relaxation, staying safe, self defence and healthy relationships. We also offer 12 week Recovery Toolkit courses and this has a focus on all three of the objectives listed. Any individual experiencing the isolation, exhaustion, humiliation, degradation and threats that are part of an abusive relationship would experience huge psychological distress. The Recovery Toolkit recognises the tremendous effort clients have made to keep themselves and their families safe. It is designed to assist each person to look at ways of developing positive lifestyle coping strategies now they are out of the abusive relationship and recovering/moving forward.
