This project was match-funded by London Economic Action Partnership at an amount of £32,000.
The National Theatre has been working on behalf of the London Theatre Consortium to support the development of a Set and Prop Recycling Centre for London Theatres. Thefacility is a new cultural infrastructure typology that would provide a way for theatres to store and make available recycled materials and components for reuse. It would enable theatres to play an active role in reducing their carbon footprint, supporting the Mayor’s target to become carbon zero by 2030. It would also have the benefit of reducing material costs for the creation of sets; these costs have been soaring in recent months. An initial small scale feasibility study was undertaken in April 2021 and this found that the idea was viable and warranted a more detailed business case to be developed. A business case report using the Five Case Model for developing business cases as recommended by Her Majesty's Treasury (HM Treasury) has now been presented to the GLA and suggests that the project is viable. The project now needs to proceed to a site feasibility to progress.

The wider aim of the scheme is: We are the national development agency for creativity and culture. By 2030 we want England to be a country in which the creativity of each of us is valued and given the chance to flourish and where everyone of us has access to a remarkable range of high quality cultural experiences. Between 2018 and 2022, we will invest £1.45 billion of public money from government and an estimated £860 million from the National Lottery to help deliver this vision.
