    ST FRANCIS' CHILDREN'S SOCIETY

A highly respected, independent voluntary adoption agency and childrens charity dating back over 150 years. The Society’s main focus is on providing secure and sustainable adoptive placements for vulnerable children through the Adoption Connections service which delivers excellent results and exceptionally low disruption rates. The Society also provides a holistic range of therapeutic services supporting adoptive families and a range of services available to adoptees, adoptive parents and birth relatives. Adopters are typically recruited from within a 50 mile radius of the Milton Keynes office, but the children placed can come from anywhere within the UK.

    Comment by the Charity:
In the year 2021-22, 85% of the children placed with our adopters were priority children, who wait the longest in the care system. These are typically: older children, sibling groups, children with additional needs or children from a mixed or minority heritage. The charity provides high quality training to prospective and approved adopters, as well as specialist therapeutic post-adoption support to prevent adoption breakdown and ensure children thrive. The charity is commissioned by a nearby local authority to provide services to support birth parents and relatives who are affected by adoption. Despite the recent challenges presented by the creation of Regional Adoption Agencies and the Coronavirus pandemic, the Society closed 2020-21 with a healthy surplus and recent consolidation and efficiency improvements has led to a more balanced budget for future years. Like many charities we do hold a pension deficit (related to a closed local government pension scheme) and are currently managing the (now reduced) repayments from our operational budget.
