A donation from High Sheriff of North Yorkshire Venetia Wrigley and her husband, administered by Two Ridings, given to Rubies for members to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.

A grant of £7,867 is recommended towards core staffing costs supporting disadvantaged young women.

As the Plan International report concluded, girls in our area are at a huge disadvantage. Many face real challenges related to poverty, domestic abuse, parental ill-health and/or substance abuse as well as low self esteem and confidence. Rubies supports girls to 'build skills and confidence' by helping them work towards 3 main outcomes: 1) Increasing self-esteem 2) Building resilience 3) Making safe choices We have developed our bespoke 10 week course to address these outcomes and to encourage girls to see themselves, and each other, as having abilities, strengths and inherent worth. The 10 week course is based on our values - as summed up by our name: R:espect - for self and others U:nderstand - emotions and feelings B:elieve - in self and others I:nspire - hopes and dreams E:ncourage - healthy relationships S:tay Safe - in person and online Our courses and activities aim to show girls that they are valued, that they can have dreams, tackle stereotypes, be themselves and try new activities, all in a safe, non-competitive environment. By working through the course in a small group with 2 trained facilitators we have found that girls start to feel more confident expressing themselves, can understand their emotions better and can recognise their unique strengths. In this environment they feel more able to try new out new things such as arts, crafts, drama or music. At Rubies we understand that for many girls in our area education and training will be the main route out of poverty and a culture of low aspiration, but, unless they are safe, resilient and able to recognise their own value, the odds of them reaching their full potential are significantly reduced. Rubies supports girls to break this cycle by offering them, and modelling, a different outlook.
