Opening the Ark is a new project aimed at increasing and dispersing the rich biodiversity found in churchyards and cemeteries out into the locality through engaging community volunteers. Our project will meet all three key themes of GRCF (nature conservation and restoration, nature-based solutions, and connecting people with nature). Burial grounds contain our oldest trees, our rarest lichens and fungi, and precious wildflower meadows. They are true arks or refuges for wildlife. Our volunteers will help manage these special places for wildlife whilst encouraging species to spread from churchyards and cemeteries to community spaces, school grounds, gardens, village greens, verges, footpath edges and field margins, providing more joined up habitats. We will train participants in biological surveying and recording as well as practical conservation skills. Under COVID safe guidelines we will bring people together, developing and maintaining relationships and increasing community cohesion. We will work with volunteers of all ages but particularly vulnerable people who can feel increasingly isolated due to lack of services and facilities. Our project is ready for an immediate start and will provide 1 new full time job (Conservation & Volunteer Project Officer) and sustain the roles of three existing CfGA staff.
