Reaching Families work to "empower, inform and support parents and families of children and young people with special educational needs in West Sussex." They deliver information, training and peer support for parent-carers. Funding was provided towards the expansion of three services over the course of 2021/22 that promote mental health and well-being in parent-carers who have struggled as a result of the covid pandemic.

The organisation will use funding to establish a peer-to-peer support service for parents-carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities in West Sussex, with the aim of enabling them to build strong relationships and networks of mutual support and achieve greater resilience and emotional wellbeing. This will include tailored information packs for new parent-carers, delivery of a two-day foundation course on key SEND issues (delivered by parent-carers) and a peer-to-peer volunteer befriending service.

Reaching Families was established in 2008 by parent-carers to “...empower, inform and care for parents and families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in West Sussex. The programme will involve the delivery of 24 three hour workshops on a wide variety of subjects to parents at various locations and venues across West Sussex.

Typically these families experience a range of challenges due to the pressures of caring. The project will be delivered through workshops and hosted by a range of freelance experts, in a road show format. A new guide will also be published in iBook and Kindle format to reach a wider audience and will touch upon various issues.
