The Platform Cafe forms part of the Loughborough Junction Action Group (LJAG) a volunteer-led charity (Which also includes Grove Adventure Playground and Loughborough Junction Farm) and aims to make Loughborough Junicton a better place to live and work. The Café is well placed, recently refurbished and wishes to offer 10 unemployed Lambeth young people per year the chance to take up 6 months of work experience and training with them. Young people will gain skills and qualifications in hospitality and entrepreneurship, including food and specialist coffee prep, social media marketing and communications experience and event management. They will also work with local business partners at the newly established LJ Works (on the LJ Farm site) to offer further work experience and employment. Young people taking part will initially complete 1 half day a week on placement, with further training, volunteering and employment opportunities possible.6y

We work for the children and families living in Loughborough Junction to create genuine and positive changes, help reconnect the community and provide opportunities for all.

To develop a programme of employment focussed training which inspires young people to believe in their own abilities, building their confidence to secure paid work or start their own business and become financially independent, and/or return to learning so they can fulfil their potential in a satisfying career that they may not have previously considered. We will use our newly refurbished Café and commercial kitchen to support unemployed young people to gain practical work experience in a commercial kitchen and café with wraparound support and mentoring tailored to individual needs. We will offer formal training including Level 2 Food Hygiene and HACCP, and young people will get hands-on experience and gain skills in hospitality, including food preparation, making barista style coffee, social media marketing and communications and event management, as well as running a small business. We will coach and mentor the individual over around 6 months to help them find their feet and discover what inspires them. We will work with local business partners to offer a range of experiences and insights and ensure that young people are able to follow a pathway into paid work. Whenever we have vacancies, young people will be offered the opportunity of paid employment at the Café, but our aim is to encourage them to move on and flourish.

Loughborough Junction Action Group - Looking Ahead

The funding will be used to employ a project coordinator at the group's community garden. The project aims to provide new activities for local people which benefit their physical and mental wellbeing.

The Loughborough Junction Action Group (LJAG) is a volunteer-led charity that works to improve the environment of Loughborough Junction and the lives of the people who live and work there. They run four projects: Loughborough Farm; The Platform Community Cafe; the Grove Adventure Playground and Craft Workshops. All of these provide safe places for children and young people to learn and play and outdoor spaces where residents can grow food and socialise. This grant would be used to bring together the existing knowledge and expertise from all of their existing projects to support vulnerable residents in Loughborough Junction during the lockdown and as they begin to return to normal. Funds would pay for a project coordinator, materials to grow and distribute plants and vegetables to low-income residents on the farm, the planning and running of online wellbeing workshops (eg Laughter Yoga, kimchi making, body positivity, and haiku writing), the development and distribution of a community newsletter and reconditioned IT and internet access for 15 families.

After-school clubs and holiday play schemes for young people who may be socially and economically disadvantaged. Young people will benefit through improved access to safe spaces, increased confidence and broader aspirations.

The project will improve the delivery of its weekend recreational activities that are designed to support children from low income families. The aim is to improve the group's service delivery.

£10,000 towards the farm project co-ordination, DIY tools and associated project costs to create a beautiful and transformed community growing space and continue growing sessions twice a week.

We want to grow healthy food for the community and grow and cook healthy food with young people at the Marcus Lipton Youth Centre.
