Woman’s Trust provides free specialist DA, therapeutic support to women across Greater London to help them overcome the debilitating mental and emotional impacts of domestic abuse. A contribution of £4,986 would provide a total of 99 counselling sessions divided between approximately 9 women from the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The grant would pay for an employed counsellor’s: salary, equipment (phone & dongle), travel, supervision, CPD training as well as publicity and associated management, admin, evaluation and core staff/overhead costs of the project. In 1-to-1 person-centred counselling, we aim to make a positive difference to women’s mental health, isolation, self-esteem, autonomy and ability to function; the long-lasting impact of these changes are that women become less vulnerable to repeat abuse, more able to safeguard and support their children, begin to reconnect with family & friends and also increase their chances of achieving their potential in education or work.

As a result of attending therapeutic support groups women will be less isolated. Both, as a direct result of attending groups, and as a result of the opportunities they have to connect with others who understand. We know some of the networks created will expand beyond groups. Women will also be healthier mentally and subsequently physically, as a result of being able to speak about their experiences and hear others stories, and know they are not to blame, and that some of what they feel is the same for others. We expect this to reduce levels of anxiety, stress and self doubt, increasing their self esteem. This in turn will impact on their autonomy and ability to make safe choices by improving their confidence and ability to process information. It will also impact on their ability to function and look after themselves and their children. We also expect women to feel safer because of their reduced vulnerability and improved ability to make safe choices. We have broken down how we measure these outcomes. In 2017/18 women accessing out therapeutic support groups reported the following outcomes in exit forms: Women felt healthier 99% reported reductions in isolation, 97% in stress and anxiety, 100% in self esteem Women felt more autonomous and make better able to make life choices 97% reporting greater confidence, 95% feeling more in control over their future, 96% reporting better awareness of other services, and 98% reporting better awareness of their own rights. Women felt better able to function 99% reporting improved ability to self-care, 94% improved relationships with their children, 100% better able to interact with others, and 99% more able to take part in groups. 99% of women felt safer

....more
This project will support 60 survivors of DA (15 paid for by this grant). Our person-centred one-to-one counselling helps women improve their mental health and empowers them to make positive changes in their lives. 17/18 outcome data shows that after counselling, women are healthier, more autonomous and better able to function (described in earlier question previous outcomes). We expect to see these changes, as well as wider societal consequences of counselling. Women are better able to support their children into healthy and promising futures, re-build relationships with family and friends, and are more confident to re-enter the community and seek employment. Our counselling acts as early intervention, helping women remain emotionally resilient before reaching crisis. We hope this will lessen their future need on already stressed NHS mental health services (NHS Providers, 2017). When a woman and her children experiencing abuse are not properly supported, it can cost society upward of 5million (Womens Aid, Change That Lasts), including police and support services. With early support in place, the societal cost of this same womans needs can drastically decrease, down to as little as 78,235. One recent client told us: Womans Trust encouraged me and believed in me when I didn't think there was a reason for living; each day was filled with fear and hopelessness. I now have a job (this feels nothing short of a miracle), a roof over my head, I feel safe and have experienced the greater good in humanity through you. You have given me hope.
