The grant will be used towards a year's costs of the Yellow Submarine Traineeship programme. The Traineeship runs over 21 hours per week (4 days per week), for 18 months. Its capacity is currently 13 trainees at any one time, to ensure we have the space and staffing to support individuals in small groups and 1:1. However we have an exciting new opportunity in the pipeline which may enable us to expand the programme by another seven places. Four hours a week are spent in the classroom working towards an appropriate qualification in Employability (we offer from Entry Level 2 up to Level 2; Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE grades 9-4, to ensure that every individual is able to access the programme at a suitable level.) 17 hours a week are spent in one of our award-winning cafés getting invaluable hands on training and experience, and putting classroom-based learning into practice (including English and Maths). As trainees progress, they are trained in vital supporting skills, such as using public transport independently. In the final six months, the focus shifts to exploring external work placements and preparing the young person for mainstream employment. Past Traineeship graduates have moved on to paid employment with (for example) M&S, Blackwell?s bookshop, Sainsbury?s, Greggs, Waitrose, Oxford?s New Theatre, Oxford University Press, McDonald?s, Stagecoach buses and Warner Leisure. Others have found meaningful voluntary work or gone forward to further training. More information can be found at: https://www.yellowsubmarineshop.org/training

This grant would be used to fund the Oxford Launchpad project - weekly evening sessions for 42 weeks per year (term time), and an additional 8 days of social activity spread across the school holidays (to help as many of our 18+ members as possible to maintain the social contacts they have made during term-time). By meeting Launchpad costs with grant-funding wherever possible, Yellow Submarine would be able to use voluntary income and volunteer hours to add considerable value to the project and meet more need - recruiting new members from the areas identified within OCF's Loneliness and Isolation Needs Analysis (2018) as experiencing higher levels of deprivation - OX1, OX3 and in particular OX4. Oxford Launchpad currently supports 32 young adults; 50% of these members live in OX1-4 postcodes, and we will target potential referrers in these areas (social care, charities, schools, colleges, carers' organisations, media) in order to support our members (and potential members) to get the most out of the opportunities available to them in the area. We will recruit both young adults already experiencing isolation, and those at risk of becoming isolated (e.g., those becoming too old for local youth clubs or specialised children's services).

In Oxfordshire 90% of adults with learning disabilities are unemployed and don't have a place at a day-service; young people with learning disabilities leaving school face this bleak future. A grant to Yellow Submarine will fund its Enterprise Manager who oversees 2 social-enterprise hubs in Oxford and Witney; these offer training and apprenticeships for young people aged 16-25 who have learning disabilities. Both hubs provide cafes and micro-enterprises such as gift-card making. The project aims to fill the gap between school and work - it will change the lives of young people with learning disabilities by giving them the skills and confidence to achieve employment and independence.
