The scheme aims to promote the importance of art in and outside the prison and to lay the foundations for a better future for the prisoners involved and for society. The 31 illustrations are of the 31 indicator species that have been identified as part of the Surrey Hills Nature Recovery Strategy (https://www.surreyhills.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/SHAONB-Nature-Recovery-Strategy-Web.pdf) The total cost of the commission is agreed at £1200. The illustrations which are of extremely high quality will be used to promote the Nature Recovery programme in the Surrey Hills through the use of the images in publicity and on posters and signs throughout the Surrey Hills. It is hoped that they will also be exhibited at public exhibitions and venues such as the Surrey Hills wood fair. In due course they may also be used to create notelets and similar material for sale to aid the charitable purposes of the Surrey Hills Society. Michael Varah Fund is a charity that facilitates and encourages the rehabilitation of prisoners and manages the Our Time programme in association with Watts Gallery. MVF acts as the agent of the prisoner and some of the funds received from the sale will go towards victim support. The Surrey Hills Trust Fund will be acknowledged on the leaflet, PR and site notices, as appropriate.
