This two-year project supported people with learning disabilities in Lewisham to start their own peer support and discussion groups. They invited guest speakers, visited relevant events, services and other groups. Two groups were established, one for male and one for female participants. The project provided a safe space for them to share, learn, and empower each other relating to issues important to them, such as health, feelings, transitions, and relationships. The groups enables people with learning disabilities the chance to meet new people, make new friendships, gain in self-confidence and to influence decision-makers on relevant issues.

People with learning difficulties are among the most disadvantaged citizens in the UK, experiencing far higher levels of unemployment, and excluded from many activities and services that most of us take for granted. There are 5,000 adults with learning disabilities in the borough of Lewisham. The project, The People’s Parliament, is a self-advocacy group of people with learning disabilities who are meeting with and getting their views across to local policy and decision-makers. The aim is to encourage local services to better respond to the needs of people with learning difficulties to improve the quality of their lives and foster greater equality.
