The charity supports families affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) will expand its project across England. Ite provides experienced and knowledgeable outreach workers to visit families, giving intensive support and advice. SMA is an inherited neuromuscular condition that affects the nerves in an area of the spinal cord called the anterior horn. Babies with type one rarely survive beyond the age of two; adolescents and adults who have a less severe form still need help to walk, breathe and feed.
