The Albert Kennedy Trust (‘akt’) provides support, advice and guidance to young people aged 16-25 who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ+) and who are homeless or living in a hostile environment. This grant will support recruitment of a dedicated Youth Engagement Manager to expand and develop an outreach project that will centre the needs and voices of the most marginalised young people. This will include developing the youth panel to work alongside the board to ensure mainstream housing providers have the skills and know-how to support people from the LGBTQ+ community.

The project is using funding to continue supporting young LGBTQ+ people aged 16-25 who are homeless or living in a hostile environment across greater London. The group supports young people who are in crisis by helping find emergency accommodation access specialist support develop skills identify and achieve life goals. The project aims to change the lives of young LGBTQ+ homeless people and to reduce the long-term social and economic impacts that homelessness and gender inequality causes.

We request funding towards our core services to provide safe homes and ensure better futures for young LGBTQ+ people aged 16-25 who are facing homelessness. This programme is managed by our Services team with staff based in London, Manchester, Newcastle and Bristol. akt provides a wrap -around service for young LGBTQ young people who are facing homelessness or living in an abusive environment. We provide safe accommodation and support from our dedicated caseworkers and other volunteers until the young person can move to independent living.

The funding is to employ an additional full-time caseworker to help young LGBTQ+ people who are homeless or living in a hostile environment in Greater London to offer advice and guidance and help them manage the Covid-19 situation and stay safe whilst looking for temporary and move-on accommodation. The pandemic has meant that many of the usual sources of support are unavailable. Young people can no longer stay with friends or sofa surf, nor access hostels. This situation is creating more calls for help, which has caused akt caseload to triple, particularly in London where the housing situation is very difficult.

A disproportionate number of young homeless people are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). Despite a less hostile environment for some LGBT people, some young people are still forced to leave their family home after they have ‘come out’ to their families.The Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT) has an excellent reputation for supporting these young people. They currently operate a successful face to face mentoring scheme but can only expand this to wherever it is needed by taking it online. The grant will fund a Project Manager who will lead on the development of an e-mentoring service which will provide advice and support especially around coming out and avoiding homelessness.
