Bradford Rape Crisis has been offering Mindfulness courses for 2 years. Feedback from participants is inspiring: From being a habitual drinker in an abusive marriage, I am now alcohol and husband free.. totally transformed my lived experience!! I've got confidence, boldness, accepting the present situation and dealing with it. I developed friendships and a sense of kinship with others. Mindfulness has been shown to be at least as effective as anti-depressant medication for the treatment of clinical-level depression. Studies have shown that mindfulness brings about long-term changes in mood, increasing levels of happiness and wellbeing. Being mindful also improves the quality of everyday life, helping us to savour the pleasures in life as they occur, and to become more fully involved and present. Mindfulness can dramatically reduce pain and our emotional reaction to it. It can improve sleep. Meditation also improves heart and circulatory health by reducing blood pressure and lowering the risk of hypertension. Benefits that are particularly relevant for survivors of sexual violence include: Mindfulness can help us accept ourselves as we are. We learn that we can sit with painful emotions and body sensations, without needing to block them out or avoid them. We can each develop a relationship with ourselves, which is grounded in kindness and compassion. By focusing on the here and now, we are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets about the past. We become less preoccupied with what other people think of us. We also become better able to form deep connections with others. Participating in Mindfulness courses at Bradford Rape Crisis and potentially progressing to a regular Mindfulness Group not only builds skills for social relationships but also actively creates a social network. During the last Mindfulness course the women formed a WhatsApp group.

Female asylum seekers who have experienced sexual violence, exploitation and torture can often face difficulties disclosing this during their asylum claims due to trauma. This can result in failed applications and women becoming destitute which can lead to further exploitation, violence, sexual violence and abuse. The group will work across West Yorkshire with women who have faced these issues to provide 1:2:1 casework and group support to address their immediate and long term safety needs; housing, food, healthcare, support with their legal cases and also friendship. Counselling will also be provided to address their trauma. The women will be empowered to take back control of their lives.
