Help Accessing Legal Support (HALS) is a programme of The Access to Justice Foundation with the Ministry of Justice. We are working with organisations to sustain and improve access to early social welfare and family legal advice, to enable users to resolve these problems as early as possible and avoid the need for court or tribunal proceedings where possible. Where court or tribunal proceedings are needed, we expect the grant will provide the support needed to help people manage their way through the process effectively. A key feature of this programme is expected to focus on helping us all understand what works better in terms of service delivery and also to help make the case for future investment in this work.

LSLIP is a two-year project funded by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). It aims to enhance services that support the earliest possible interventions for litigants in person reducing the risk of their problems escalating. To develop our understanding of how and when litigants in person access different services to help ensure that services are designed around the people who need to use them. To build an evidence base of what works and what doesn’t by evaluating the effectiveness of the support delivered by the new grant to litigants in person.

Personal Support Unit (PSU) is a guidance and support charity helping people facing civil or family court cases without legal support. PSU in Chester will provide bespoke, one-to-one support to enable those facing court proceedings in Chester, to represent themselves to the best of their ability and to provide emotional support at this time of crisis. By empowering people going through proceedings with life-changing consequences (such as homelessness, bankruptcy or loss of contact with their children) they are more likely to represent themselves effectively in court and to receive the right decision – regardless of the outcome, they are better equipped to deal with their case and its consequences. The grant will make a contribution towards PSU Chester’s direct costs for one year (including salary costs, volunteer costs and office costs).
