£ 6,160 has been awarded to S.H.E UK to raise awareness for services for survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The organisation wants to end the stigma and taboo that survivors of childhood sexual abuse experience from services such as the police, the NHS and the criminal justice system. With this grant, the organisation will form a group of survivors to explore barriers to accessing compassionate, trauma-informed services. The group will co-design awareness raising and educational training materials to engage with services to share resources and offer training.

This two-year project based in Mansfield supports adult female survivors of childhood sexual abuse, sexual violence, and rape who experience debilitating mental health issues such as chronic anxiety, depression and personality disorders. Weekly sessions offer long-term engagement and specialist workers with opportunities for self-development. Peer mentors and support groups help friendships to develop in a safe space of mutual support and belonging. The idea for the project has come from the participants who influence the development of the project through a service user forum.

We would like to provide two courses. One on peer mentoring and the other on confidence building.The peer mentor course will be an eight-week course, educating women who have accessed our services on how to be a peer mentor to new service users who are struggling to access the service.It will include the following:Healthy boundaries,Assertiveness,Benefits of peer mentoring,Discussions around theory such as the drama triangle and awareness of manipulation so that they don't get drawn into providing unhealthy support.The aim of the confidence building course will be to supply our service users with skills and techniques for them to gain confidence to start delivering their own courses. A number of our women have expressed an interest in taking a lead on delivering peer support groups and other creative/fun courses without having to rely on the staff team.By engaging in these courses, our services users will have the skills to deliver their own on things like healthy coping strategies, self-care techniques, and much more. The intention behind this is that they can share their own hands-on experiences with each other and gain a sense of achievement from helping others.
