Swansea Community Farm's grant of £249,988 will employ three part time staff who will manage over 150 new volunteers each year. There will be a specific focus on recruiting volunteers with mental health issues and using the farm as a way of self-prescribing in order to aid recovery. Activities include working with the animals, site maintenance, community allotment work and conservation. Volunteer workdays will take place every Tuesday and Thursday and will be accessible for anyone over the age of 16 in Swansea and surrounding areas.

This two-year project offers twice-weekly farm workdays to volunteers who experience mental ill-health, to help care for the farm’s animals and carry out maintenance and conservation tasks on a 3.5 acre working farm in the outskirts of Swansea. Staff provide support, structure and training, and volunteers offer peer support and can join a peer mentor programme when they’ve gained sufficient experience. The idea comes from participant feedback and they continue to be involved in the development of the project through regular reviews, meetings, and chances for informal feedback. The project aims to allow a core group of volunteers to work on the farm in an in-depth way, developing long-term plans for better animal care and conservation management, whilst empowering people to better care for themselves and others’ wellbeing.

The project will employ a new wellbeing worker, support worker and utilise an existing training manager to support people with mental health issues into volunteering and training at the farm. 20 volunteers will be trained in mental health management skills and support a 100 volunteers into outdoor volunteering. This will involve improving the site, events and to disseminate wellbeing messages to visitors. The grant of £99,992, over two years, will be used to cover salaries and general running costs.
