Survive (Support for Survivors of Sexual Abuse) delivers specialist services to adult survivors of sexual violence (including male survivors) in York and across North Yorkshire. The proposed project is a 12-month pilot of the expansion of our services to East Riding of Yorkshire where there are no other services with the sole focus and specialism of supporting survivors of sexual violence. We want to fill this gap, so we are seeking £5000 from Assura Community Fund for a part-time counsellor and a part-time support worker to deliver services face-to-face, via telephone or online to survivors of sexual violence in East Riding. The pilot, based in Pocklington (7 miles from the Market Weighton Practice) will mean that people living in East Riding who have experienced rape, sexual assault as adults or child sexual abuse to will have access to our highly-valued services to find relief from distress; discover their self-worth; reconnect with their lives and relationships; and explore and achieve their full potential.

This project aligns closely to all three of the objectives prioritised by the Tampon Tax fund, since each targets recognised common impacts of sexual violence. Build skills and confidence: Whilst some survivors of sexual violence are able to compartmentalise their experience and are high-functioning, for the majority of people who have suffered sexual abuse, it will significantly impact their ability to cope day-to-day; memories of the lack of control they felt at the time of the experience will impact their ability to make decisions. The activities outlined have been identified by sexual violence survivors as key skills that will increase their ability to manage day-to-day, and build confidence for the future. Improve health and well-being: Our activities are a mix of fun, creative, physical and life-skills. It is widely recognised that exercise is beneficial for physical and mental health; creativity is similarly linked to well-being. We anticipate that some clients will choose to continue with some of the activities having experienced it in a safe environment, and will therefore gain additional health benefits beyond the programmes duration. Build social networks for women: Women survivors of abuse often describe feelings of low self esteem, isolation, shame and guilt, self-blame. Encouraging survivors to support each other and develop social bonds embeds understanding that their feelings are understandable and normal, reducing feelings of isolation and shame. The final session of the programme is a social activity to be decided by each group.
