SURVIVORS FUND (SURF)

Survivors Fund (SURF) is the principal international organisation representing and supporting survivors of the genocide in Rwanda. SURF recognises that a holistic approach, is required to ensure vulnerable and marginalised survivors are empowered to rebuild their lives. Our model is to build the capacity of survivor-led partner organisations to develop and deliver such work independently.

They ....more Survivors of the Rwandan genocide witnessed the murders of their spouses, children, families, and neighbours. Many were tortured, mutilated, raped, infected with HIV or bore children of rape. They lost their homes and their means of earning an income. Today, Rwanda is peaceful. Its government has helped steer the country toward reconciliation and a better future. It is no surprise, though, that survivors continue to suffer from their personal and collective trauma. As a result of this project widows will get group counselling, access to microfinance, and one-to-one support to help rebuild their lives. Their dependents will receive counselling and education to protect themselves from HIV.

It will increase ....more This project, based in five districts in Rwanda, will transform the lives of widowed genocide survivors, enabling them to access mental healthcare, particularly trauma counselling. It will increase the capacity of the five existing full-time professional counsellors through a network of 82 psychosocial volunteers. 82 volunteer paralegals will complement the work of the volunteers and empower widows and their dependants to claim their rights through sensitisation, information/education and support.
