students will gain employability skills students will gain research skills relevant to their STEM placement students will complete a four week work placement students will gain the prestigious Gold CREST Award students will gain insight of academic/working world students will gain self confidence, motivation and esteem The female students will be ale to see that university is a place for them to excel and expand their career horizons. These placements tackle the critical issue of lack of diversity in STEM study at higher levels, and chronic lack of aspiration/progression in female students from challenging economic circumstances and/or no prior history of University education in the family whilst at the same time selecting high achieving students. I have no doubt the SATRO Extended Research Placement programme produces some of the futures top female scientists and engineers. Dr Radu Sporea, University of Surrey Students have their eyes opened to potential opportunities and excitement of career opportunities which, in turn, leads to improved results in STEM subjects, and improved uptake of these subjects at all stages of progression. Historically, following A levels all students progress to university to study a STEM subject. We actively seek funding for students from corporates and Foundations as the programme is fully scalable we only recruit bursary students we have funding for. These students do not come from families who have contacts who would be able to secure they type of placements; they are competitive and highly sought after.
