For the women we work with their internal experience can be extremely chaotic, always on high alert and continually thinking about things. Many have been rejected from mainstream services as too damaged, further adding to their trauma. They have often been told that they are attention seeking or manipulative, and frequently feel isolated from others because of their experiences, e.g. of crime or having children taken into care, meaning they feel ashamed or like a bad person and that others are judging them. The work that we do with women helps them to understand their behaviour within the context of what has happened to them rather than blaming themselves and helps them to set their own boundaries and take responsibility for making changes. Support in a group rather than one-to-one also helps women to not feel so alone. Women in our recent evaluation were very positive about the impact of group support, one said, I think youre learning something from it because theres other people in situations as well so you think youre not the only one. The impact of the therapeutic support groups we expect, based on current feedback in our performance monitoring and evaluation includes: -Women will have better mental and emotional health, including feeling less anxious and depressed, and being better able to recognise, understand and manage their emotions. -Women will be thinking about the future more positively, feeling more in control of life and have identified goals to work towards. -Women will be less isolated and will recognise what makes a good or bad relationship and have more positive and supportive relationships and friendships. -Women will be better able to manage their lives. -The negative impact of the womens mental and emotional health on children and other family and friends will be reduced.

New Dawn New Day (NDND) will enable activity-based peer support for women who have been involved in the criminal justice system through a weekly facilitated New Directions group, receiving referrals from police and probation.Most of our clients experienced trauma as a child or young adult. They are anxious and depressed and many have personality disorders, PTSD and substance misuse issues. Some have been rejected from other services as too damaged. Women are ashamed about their crimes or having had children taken into care, and are worried about being judged elsewhere. Women say that meeting other women like them, is incredibly powerful in helping them to face what has happened and to move on.Our clients internal experience can be chaotic and always on high alert. Being involved in an activity helps to settle this and to build relationships in an unthreatening way. Skilled facilitation will enable women give and receive support around their mental and emotional health through informal discussions and more structured sessions during the group.Women will be determine group activities, e.g. crafts, mindfulness, hand massage, or trips out. Some women will become peer leaders, helping with deciding and coordinating sessions and encouraging and welcoming group members.The most important changes that women told us they make through involvement with our groups are feeling less alone or less anxious and depressed, better able to understand and manage their emotions, thinking about the future more positively, feeling more in control, and developing more positive and supportive relationships.

Their support includes outreach and engagement, one-to-one case work and group support sessions, counselling and physiotherapy.
