The funding programme aims to support organisations working to sustain and improve access to early social welfare and family legal support and advice, to enable users to resolve these problems as early as possible and avoid the need for court or tribunal proceedings where possible. Where court or tribunal proceedings are needed, we expect the grant to provide the support needed to help people navigate the process effectively, including where support to prepare for court and at court is required.

The funding will help build on the existing service for vulnerable migrants and to develop new areas of advice to meet the new and emerging needs produced by the changing legal situation. Welcome Advice plans to bring together SNSCAB’s long-standing immigration advice Asylum Advice team and projects trialled to meet the increasing needs identified during the pandemic enabling the organisation to respond more flexibly to the growing and complex needs of vulnerable migrants in North Staffordshire. Over the 4 years SNSCAB expects to support more than 1800 people.

This builds on an existing project delivered by Staffordshire North and Stoke on Trent Citizens Advice Bureau which aims to provide an outreach advice service delivered in local communities to help benefit claimants adjust to changes brought by the Government’s Welfare Reform Programme. A new service delivery model will be developed in response to these changes to meet the various needs of different beneficiary groups. The project aims to help more than 600 beneficiaries impacted by welfare reform.

Around 3.7 million working age people have some form of hearing loss, of which the profoundly deaf are four times more likely to be unemployed and become socially isolated; this can leave them vulnerable to debt and lack confidence in accessing mainstream services to maximize and manage their income. The grant will enable Staffordshire North and Stoke on Trent CAB to reach out and provide advice and impart skills and knowledge on money and debt management to people with hearing impairments. This will in turn improve the CAB’s accessibility targeted at those with hearing impairments and increase the confidence and competences of those with hearing impairments to manage their money better.
