The Pollinator Peer Project aims to provide increased availability and facilitation of peer support both group and individual within the Sunflower Womens Centre, Plymouth. At the heart of this project will be the provision of effective mental health peer support delivered for and by women, known as Pollinators, who have experience of multiple disadvantage through their backgrounds of addiction, repeated child removals, childhood, domestic and sexual abuse and / or offending. The Project Manager will recruit and train Pollinators peer leaders who will be given the resources, supervision and support to carry out their roles effectively. They will help provide a safe place for women to use their shared experiences to give and receive support from each other, helping to develop effective, two-way meaningful relationships. Pollinators will be empowered to identify peer mentees, map existing provision and help fertilise and grow further peer support to effectively meet the needs of the growing number of women supported by the centre. The Pollinator Peer Project builds on the SWCs experience of peer support which women find a major lifeline.Through recruiting and upskilling Pollinators, the mental health peer support will grow and flourish to become self-sustaining, supporting more than 200 women every year from across Plymouth or who have relocated to Plymouth.

....more
Women involved in the project will gain an increased level of knowledge linked to nutrition and self-care which will improve both their physical and mental health and wellbeing. Sadly, many of the women we work with were in care themselves as a child and so their education was limited. Upon being given the opportunity to keep their child, we see a complete change in the womens approach wanting to be the best mum they can possibly be and so there is a real and heartfelt demand from the women to improve their nutrition and self-care knowledge not only to benefit themselves but to benefit their children so that ultimately they can live happier, healthier and fulfilled lives. Improving the womens health and wellbeing will also increase their long-term abstinence from any substances which will positively impact their long term recovery. Not only will this impact the life opportunities and chances for the women and children, but also the cost to society as a whole. Through increased education around health and wellbeing, the women will also gain increased levels of confidence and self-esteem. Again, this is vital in order to further increase their longer term recovery rates and integration into society. The R & R womens project also has the add on benefit of increasing social connections through the friendships they will make ultimately reducing social isolation (which is closely linked to depression) which in turn will further positively impact their mental wellbeing and long term recovery.
